Development: Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe monument

Architect: Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe
Concept: Creating balance with semmingly unbalanced forms

Original Design:

First development:
I was very unhappy with this development because I tried to structurally organise the prisms better here but instead, the design became boring and dull by its very simple structure. Also, the main problem of this design was that it did not follow the concept very well as it looked very stable and didn't include any unbalanced forms.

Research/Influence:
Timmelsjoch Experience Pass Museum

Second Development:
Influenced by the Timmelsjoch Experience Pass Museum, I decided to incorporate irregular shapes in to my design to fulfill the 'unbalanced form' part of the concept. Then I tried to make the design stable by balancing out the irregular shape with another irregular shape and adding some stable structure. The result was better than the previous development, but I was still unhappy this design because it didn't fit in to the environment very well. It stood out compared to the other monument because unlike the other monument, it didn't look as if it belonged to the environment.

Third development:

Final development:
In my final design, following my concept 'Creating balance with seemingly unbalanced forms,' I incorporated irregular shapes which looks unstable alone to make the form look unbalanced at first. However, you see how a balance is created within the overall form by repetition of long rectangular prism structure holding the two large irregular shapes together.

Development: Rem Koolhaas monument cont.d

I've placed my second development of Rem Koolhaa's monument here according to one of the ideas I had but the design looked very out of place and the relationship with the environment were hardly visible.

To create a relationship between my monument and the environment, I took another one of my ideas and edited my terrain to create a space where the monument could be placed and also be linked to the environment. The empty space in the above image is the area which is created for the monument's placement.

There is a clear relationship between Rem Koolhaas's monument and the environment as the monument achieves high stability by how the roof is fixed in to the surrounding terrain. This explains why the roof is angled because the two sides of the terrace beside the monument are in different height, one lower than the other, so the roof has to be angled for both sides of the roof to be fixed in to the terrace. Also, this placement of monument does not interrupt the  horizontal curve of the terrace, so the monument doesn't look out of place.

Development: Rem Koolhaas monument

Architect: Rem Koolhaas
Concept: Regular is irregular in terms of tesselation

 First two progress of development:

As I developed my monument design, I found it difficult to make large developments, but only small additions of detail and structure were done. Therefore, I decided to keep the idea of repeating vertical and horizontal structure to relate to the concept of "Regular is irregular in terms of tesselation," but make changes to the overall form in my next development.

Third development:
I was unhappy with this development because it had the idea of 'regularity' but didn't have much of the 'irregular' effect and therefore, I was unsuccessful in terms of following my concept. Also, it looked very plain and uniteresting due to its simple structure.

Fourth development:
My previous designs of development were much horizontally structured, but in this design, I focused on the vertical structure instead because when I imported my previous designs, it was very difficult to make the design fit in to the natural environment. All of them looked very out of place and unnatural. Therefore, I thought of ways I could make the monument fit the environment with a better flow, and my final solution was to choose a specific area of the environment where I want the monument to be placed and develop the design which is suitable for this specific environment.

Ideas: Relationships bewteen the 2 monuments, meeting point and environment

I explored different placements of the two monuments and meeting place with close relationship to the environment. Then I applied few of these ideas to cryengine with my monument designs to find out which ideas work and is most suitable for my design.
